Misery loves company.

I thought that while living in the Washington, DC area for a merciless 13 years. I think about it every time I visit the DMV. I consider it each week during the summer when I travel by air. Here are my observations:

  • While living in the DMV (DC/MD/VA) area, I’d observe drivers in the morning and evening rush. Nobody looked happy.
  • At the DMV, the majority of employees seem grouchy and aren’t bothered in the least that they show us.
  • In the summer you see two types of travelers. The excited families on their way to their vacation, away from their miserable jobs and careers, and the grumpy ones who are returning home…to their miserable jobs and careers.

Surely there has to be a better way. I don’t believe any of us were created to be miserable 51 weeks of the year. If you want to figure out what you actually are wired to do, consider your D.E.S.I.G.N.

D: Desire. What are you passionate about? What drives you? What kind of real-world problems would you rather be solving?

E: Experience. What have you learned formally and from the school of “Hard Knocks?”

S: Situation. Where are you right now and how will this impact any career change you want to make?

I: Individual Style. What does your personality tell the world about you? How can you leverage it to maximize your success?

G: Growth Stage. Where are you in your career right now? What options do you have at this time?

N: Natural Abilities. What are you good at? What sorts of things did you master at an early age and still enjoy doing?

By discovering your D.E.S.I.G.N. you have the opportunity to do a reboot on your career. When your D.E.S.I.G.N. and your career are in alignment, you’ll feel better and perform better.

This week, why not get busy figuring out your D.E.S.I.G.N.? I want you to have the career you were wired for. I’m sure you want that too.
