“It’s just like riding a bike.”

How many times have you heard that one?

Do you remember the first time you rode your bike?  I can’t, but then again I’m in my mid 50s.  But, if you told me to ride one, I could do it.  And, not just because I ride a spin bike at the gym.  There is enough mental and muscle memory that I’ll always be able to do it.  At least until I get too old to ride.

If you think about it, much of what we do on a daily basis is done without thinking.  If you drove to work today, there is a good chance you can’t recall much of the drive.

When was the last time you learned something new?

If you’re The Boss, there’s a good chance you COULD learn something new each day, but that lesson might come at a price.  Little kids learn not to touch a hot stove, usually because they touched it in the first place.  It’s a tough way to learn.  Unintentional lessons can be costly.

Since you’re The Boss, why not make it a priority to learn something new each day?   Your job is to fix systems and processes, protect the house, and develop your people.  That’s three big categories to pick from.  Here are some suggestions:

Fix Systems and Processes

  • Read books on systems thinking like The Fifth Discipline by Peter Senge.
  • Learn how to work basic process tools like a flowchart or a Fishbone diagram.
  • Study your processes to look for improvement opportunities.

Protect The House

  • Start paying attention during boring HR compliance training.
  • Attend meetings at your local SHRM or ATD chapter.
  • Make employee safety a priority.

Develop People

  • Have regular one-on-one meetings with direct reports.
  • Take an active interest in their career development.
  • Read books and listen to podcasts on developing people.
  • Get yourself a coach.

Our brains are wired to continually store knowledge. Taking time on a regular basis to learn is just as important as regular exercise and diet is to the rest of your body’s health and well-being.

This week, put together a learning plan for yourself.  Even if it’s just 30 minutes each day.  I’ve made this a part of my daily routine and know it makes a huge difference.  Will you join me?
